Tips for New Motorcyclists

MotorcycleAre you thinking about buying a motorcycle for the first time? Or perhaps you’re returning to the hobby after many years without a bike? Whatever your reason for buying a new motorcycle, there are a few things you should familiarize yourself with before committing.

Education

Before buying a motorcycle of your own, it’s beneficial to enroll in a motorcycle class in order to learn the skills required to ride safely. You may not be as comfortable riding a motorcycle as you thought you would be, and it’s best to figure that out before purchasing a bike of your own. Once you’ve learned to ride and decided that you wish to purchase a motorcycle, you’ll need to obtain a motorcycle license so you can legally ride.

Bike

Once you’ve decided to buy a motorcycle, you have to choose which type of motorcycle suits your needs. If your bike is to be your primary mode of daily transportation, a traditional motorcycle is the way to go. A touring bike or cruiser is ideal for long, scenic rides with a passenger behind you. And if you’re into racing, a sport bike may be for you. Visit your local motorcycle dealer for more details on the different types of motorcycles.

Budget

Most motorcycles are less expensive than cars (however, high-end bikes can exceed $30,000), but budgeting is still an important part of every large purchase you make. Some people prefer to purchase a used bike at first to get the feel of riding and make sure they truly enjoy the hobby before committing to the higher price of a new bike.

Safety

Buying a motorcycle also requires the purchase of safety gear. Helmets in particular are lifesavers, and are even required in many states. Ensure that your helmet of choice is certified by a trusted testing agency, such as the DOT or the Snell Memorial Foundation. In addition to a helmet, you may consider a jacket, gloves, boots, eye-wear and body armor for riding. This safety gear is your only protection during a fall, so invest in quality products so you can ride with peace of mind.
